Averrhoa Carambola is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.
The tree is cultivated in tropical and semitropical regions for its edible Star Fruit.
It is a small, slow growing tree or shrub that grows 5–12 metres tall, with rose to red-purple flowers. The flowers are small and bell-shaped, with five petals that have whitish edges. The flowers are often produced year round under tropical conditions.
The tree is cultivated in tropical and semitropical regions for its edible juicy fruits, yellow inside. When ripe they have a crisp texture and when cut in cross-section are star shaped.
Copes with temperatures close to freezing as the tree gets older, but growth slows and stops at temperatures 15°C and under.
