Kniphofia laxiflora, also known as the slender red hot poker, is an evergreen perennial native to Southern Africa. It is distinguished from other Kniphofia species by its more lax, or loosely arranged, flower spikes and broader bracts

  • Foliage: The plant forms clumps of arching, strap-shaped, dark green leaves. The foliage is evergreen in milder climates but can die back in cold areas.
  • Flowers: The flowers are tubular and appear on sturdy, erect stems from midsummer into autumn. Buds are often a strong orange-red and gradually change to a paler yellow or salmon-pink as they mature and droop.
  • Form: It is a medium-sized plant, with flower stalks reaching up to about 0.9 meters (3 feet) high.
  • Sun and soil: For the best flowering, plant in full sun, though it can tolerate partial shade. It prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist, but well-drained soil and dislikes chalky soil.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially in the first year. Established plants can tolerate some drought but prefer consistent moisture during the growing season.
  • Winter care: In cold regions, protect the plant's crown with a dry winter mulch, such as straw.
  • Pruning: Remove spent flower stems after flowering and tidy up old or dead leaves in the spring.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated by dividing established clumps in the spring or by taking basal cuttings.
