Phyllostachys pubescens, called Moso bamboo is a winter hardy giant bamboo. In spring, when new culms shoot, you can see how fast the Moso bamboo will grow, adult plants may grow around 18 inches a day. Phyllostachys pubescens is originated in China (region Hainan) and will be 50 - 92 feet tall with culms about 3 - 5 inches thick. Young culms, which are of blue-green color, look as though they were covered with white powder. Leaves hang down like a waterfall. Moso bamboo can remain healthy even at temperatures as low as -20 C. Young shoots are edible. In Japan Phyllostachys pubescens is called „noble bamboo. Photos Thomas Grünewald.

Pre-soak bamboo seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water (about 86 F).

Soak them in water and put in a plastic pot. Sow the seeds on the peat pellets and cover the seeds with a thin layer of peat (about 2 mm).

Then put the plastic pot in a zip-lock bag - with a pot size of 6 cm , a zip-lock bag of size 12 x 17 cm is recommended . Fill in the zip-lock bag as much tap water with a few drops of universal fertilizer, so that after the absorption of the substrate a few mm of water remain on the bottom.

Location: on the windowsill or in a small greenhouse in partial shade, daytime temperatures at about 80–90 F, somewhat lower at night at 77-83 F.

The germination time for bamboo seeds, depending on the species, will be between 10 and 40 days.
