Dipogon lignosus, commonly known as the Cape sweet-pea or mile-a-minute vine, is a fast-growing perennial vine native to South Africa. It is known for its fragrant, pea-like flowers and ability to quickly climb over other vegetation. Due to its vigorous growth, it is considered an invasive weed in some parts of the world.
- Appearance: Dipogon lignosus is a twining, herbaceous perennial with soft green stems that can grow up to 4 meters long, becoming woody at the base.
- Leaves: The leaves are compound, with three diamond-shaped leaflets that are dark to medium green on top and paler underneath.
- Flowers: Fragrant, pea-like flowers appear in colors ranging from pink, mauve, and magenta to purple. They grow in clusters on long stalks at the tips of new growth.
- Fruit: The plant produces flat, sickle-shaped seed pods that contain four to six seeds. The pods can burst explosively when ripe, spreading seeds several meters away
- Native range: This plant is native to South Africa, particularly the Western and Eastern Cape regions, where it grows along forest margins and streambanks.
- Climate: While evergreen in warmer climates, it can become deciduous in areas with frost. It is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions, including drought or dampness, wind, salt, and poor soils.
- Propagation: Spreads via seeds, which can be dispersed by birds, water, and wind. It can also grow from rhizome
