Satyrium coriifolium, also known as the orange satyre or Ewwa-trewwa, is a terrestrial orchid species native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa

  • Flowers: The plant produces a dense raceme of bright yellow to orange flowers, often tinged with red. The flowers are non-resupinate, meaning they do not twist 180 degrees during development. Two horn-like spurs, a characteristic feature of the Satyrium genus, emerge from the back of each flower.

  • Plant size: As a robust, stout geophyte, the stem can grow from 18 cm to 77 cm tall.
  • Flowering season: The blooming period for Satyrium coriifolium is typically from August to October
  • Habitat: This species is found in moist, sandy flats in the subtropical biome, often in fynbos or grassy areas. It is sometimes found as a roadside weed. Fires may help stimulate its flowering.
